As evident from its name, Teacher’s Day is a special occasion dedicated to teachers. According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Brahma is the creator of the universe. Similarly, teachers are the creators of the future of our nation. The first teacher in everyone’s life is their mother. Later, we step into the school where education and knowledge are imparted by our teachers. Thus, the bond between a teacher and a student is forged.

"Guru Brahma Guru Vishnu, Guru Devo Maheshwara, Guru Sakshat Parabrahma, Tasmai Shri Guruve Namah"

This ancient Shloka is a reminder of the eternal reverence towards teachers, often taught to children as they grow. In the past, before Teacher’s Day became an official celebration, the “Guru-Shishya” bond was already an integral part of our culture. Before embarking on any important work, people used to recite this Shloka, viewing it as the "Guru-mantra". My parents and teachers taught me this in my early days. Even now, whenever I wish to express my gratitude, I recite this Shloka to honor my teachers.

Education is a nation-building process, and teachers play an active role in shaping it. Teaching is often described as a noble profession. Teachers impart knowledge, teach life values, and instill discipline in students who are the future of our nation. They are considered our second parents, a universally acknowledged truth. A teacher’s responsibility lies in helping students recognize and cultivate their latent abilities, promoting well-rounded development of their personalities. They emphasize moral growth, shaping students' characters.

Teachers’ Day is celebrated as a token of gratitude towards teachers for their immense contribution. It is celebrated to honor Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan for his invaluable role as a teacher and educator. His birth anniversary, September 5, has become synonymous with Teacher’s Day, honoring his contributions to education and students.

The Significance of Teacher's Day

Teacher’s Day is celebrated worldwide, although different countries observe it on different dates. However, in India, it is celebrated on 5th September every year, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the renowned teacher, philosopher, and the second President of India. Teachers' Day serves as a heartfelt occasion to thank our teachers for their hard work, discipline, and unwavering support in our lives.

If you are a student, you likely understand what a teacher truly represents. Teachers guide, amend, scold when needed, and, at times, punish. However, deep within, we realize that they aim to nurture us into successful, civilized individuals by polishing our virtues and guiding us away from vices.

A successful individual, whether employed or running a business, undoubtedly understands the importance of their teachers' contributions. The success they have attained, and the future successes that await, are the results of the knowledge and values imparted by their teachers.

The Genesis of Teacher's Day

Teachers’ Day came into being as a tribute to teachers and their vital role in nation-building by shaping the lives of students through knowledge and discipline. Additionally, it honors Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a remarkable scholar, philosopher, and teacher. Upon assuming office as President in 1962, Dr. Radhakrishnan’s students requested permission to celebrate his birth anniversary as Teachers' Day. Dr. Radhakrishnan humbly suggested that instead of celebrating him personally, students celebrate Teachers’ Day to honor all teachers.

Dr. Radhakrishnan's scholarly pursuits are remarkable, having authored the book The Philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore in 1917 and served as Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University and Banaras Hindu University. As a tribute to his achievements, India celebrates September 5th as Teachers' Day, in recognition of his profound contributions.

Activities for Teachers' Day

Teachers' Day is observed with various activities in schools, colleges, and educational institutions. Students engage in performances, dances, and other celebrations as a gesture of appreciation and respect for their teachers.

Even those no longer in school or college should take this opportunity to express gratitude to their mentors. Teachers shape the foundation of quality education and take pride in the success of their students.

We could visit teachers on this day and share how their values and teachings helped us build our character. This personal gesture will undoubtedly make them proud. A small token of appreciation, such as a pen or planner, would serve as a memorable gift for teachers.

In the ancient era, the tradition of "Guru-dakshina" existed, where students would repay their teacher for the knowledge they received. An iconic example is that of Eklavya, who, despite being a great archer, honored Guru Drona by offering his right thumb as a tribute after being taught through an idol.

In today’s world, Teacher’s Day is the modern counterpart of "Guru-dakshina". It symbolizes our expression of love, respect, and gratitude to our teachers.

On Teacher’s Day, we can seek blessings from our teachers, acknowledging how their teachings impacted our lives. We can also gift books or other materials to teachers or organize a gathering, especially after graduation, to celebrate the memories.

Teachers are integral to a nation’s development. Teacher’s Day gives us an opportunity to honor their contributions and acknowledge their role in shaping our future. This day is crucial as it allows us to express our gratitude, respect, and love towards the teachers who shaped our lives and guided us along the right path.

As stated by the great philosopher, Aristotle: “Those who educate children well are more to be honored than parents, for these only gave life, those the art of living well.”

Teacher's Day is the best opportunity to express our gratitude for the invaluable lessons imparted to us. Through their dedication, teachers nurture future generations, making their contribution to society irreplaceable and invaluable.
