Teachers: Society's True Heroes in the 21st Century

"If you have to put someone on a pedestal, put teachers. They are society's heroes."

A great teacher does more than teach lessons—they shape lives, build character, and inspire generations.

Every year on September 5, we celebrate Teachers' Day to honour those who dedicate their lives to shaping minds without expecting anything in return. Parents give us life, but teachers illuminate it with knowledge, values, and purpose. The timeless saying, "He who teaches us is next to the Divine," continues to resonate because teachers help us discover the best versions of ourselves.

Whenever Teachers' Day arrives, memories from my school years come rushing back. Decorating classrooms, writing greetings on the blackboard, presenting small gifts, and expressing gratitude to our teachers were moments that remain etched in my heart. Those were beautiful days.

I often think of one teacher in particular—my Tamil teacher, Mr. Krishnan. He was not merely an instructor; he was a mentor, a guide, and a friend who transformed an ordinary student into someone who developed a lifelong love for literature and learning.

His classes were unlike any other. Every day began with an inspiring thought or an interesting piece of information. Books remained closed until he had finished explaining the lesson because he wanted us to listen, imagine, and think before reading.

He could identify even the smallest mistake in our writing, yet he never discouraged anyone. Instead of limiting education to textbooks, he encouraged discussions on current affairs, social issues, and even politics. Once every week, he organised classroom dramas where students played the roles of leaders, citizens, and historical figures. Through these activities, he nurtured confidence, creativity, and leadership.

The relationship between teacher and student extended far beyond the classroom. He stood beside us during our failures and celebrated our successes. Although he is no longer with us, the lessons he taught continue to guide countless lives.

Across the world, there are thousands of teachers like him—quietly transforming society, one student at a time. It is the responsibility of every learner to value these mentors while they still have the opportunity.

Unfortunately, modern headlines often tell a different story. Reports of students disrespecting or even attacking teachers over disciplinary actions or classroom rules have become increasingly common. Such incidents raise an uncomfortable question: What kind of society are we becoming?

Technology has undoubtedly transformed education. Information is available instantly through the internet, artificial intelligence, and digital platforms. Yet knowledge alone does not create responsible human beings.

A search engine can provide answers.

Artificial intelligence can explain concepts.

But neither can replace the wisdom born from years of experience, compassion, ethical judgment, and genuine human connection.

A teacher does much more than deliver lessons or prepare students for examinations.

Teachers help students discover their strengths, overcome weaknesses, and build confidence. They nurture creativity, develop emotional intelligence, encourage critical thinking, and inspire young minds to dream beyond limitations.

In today's rapidly changing world, students face challenges that previous generations could scarcely imagine—digital distractions, mental health concerns, information overload, social pressure, and uncertainty about the future. More than ever, they need mentors who can guide them with empathy and understanding.

Teachers remain those mentors.

They do not merely produce graduates; they shape citizens.

They encourage curiosity instead of conformity.

They build character alongside competence.

They teach us not only how to make a living, but also how to live with integrity.

As Nelson Mandela wisely observed, education is the most powerful weapon to change the world. Yet education becomes transformative only when guided by dedicated teachers.

The widening gap between teachers and students is therefore a matter of concern. While technology should enrich learning, it must never replace respect, trust, or meaningful human relationships. Education flourishes where curiosity meets compassion, and where teachers and students learn from one another.

Teachers are the true architects of every nation. Scientists, doctors, engineers, entrepreneurs, artists, civil servants, and leaders all begin their journeys in classrooms shaped by committed educators.

If society chooses to place anyone on a pedestal, it should be teachers, for they create the heroes of tomorrow.

To every teacher: thank you for your patience, your sacrifice, your wisdom, and your unwavering belief in your students.

And to every student: cherish your teachers while you have the privilege of learning from them. Knowledge may be available everywhere, but the guidance of a good teacher remains one of life's greatest gifts.
