A representation of hope, unity, and the responsibility of youth to build a peaceful and compassionate future.

Dear Children of today and Youth of tomorrow,

I hope you have a wonderful childhood filled with love and laughter, and I wish, in your youth, you shine bright, eliminating the darkness of negativity and hatred prevailing in the world.

You might have read this letter during your childhood, but you will find it more relevant in your youth. The reason, I believe young minds of every generation possess great zeal and strength to bring revolutionary changes in the world. A child is too naive to decipher the complexities of life, and an adult, burdened by familial responsibilities, lacks the courage and enthusiasm to initiate a fight against the evil of society, but that doesn’t stop either of them from dreaming of a future of universal peace and prosperity. Many times we see our dreams crashing, yet a ray of hope remains alive, because, somewhere in our hearts, we believe that we can and will manifest our dreams. Though I am not completely unsatisfied with the present yet, I feel that with mutual efforts, some lost peace of the world can be restored, and for that, my young people, I need your help and support. With this in mind, I am conveying my thoughts and feelings via this letter.

It might appear one-way communication to you, but trust me, it’s not; I am conveying myself via this letter, and your reply will be via your actions; the coming future will show a glimpse of the outcome of this conversation. I am not asking you to blindly agree with me; my interpretation of some situations may or may not resonate with yours, in some cases I might be right in predicting future consequence of current scenarios, and others might be reflection of my insecurities; all I want you to read this letter with a mind free of ego and preconceived notions, reasoning everything I said with an unbiased attitude and, accepting what resonates while discarding the rest. So let's begin our conversation.

Currently, there is so much unrest in the world; people are fighting in the name of religion, caste, ethnicity; they are ready to ruin others to satisfy their greed for power, political and geographical boundaries, and even for harbouring different opinions and beliefs. It’s not that such intolerance was never there in the past; history is full of battles and massacres which could have been avoided, but alas, we never learnt from the mistakes of our ancestors. Earlier too, we were victims of divide and rule, and still, we allow some corrupt and mischievous minds to lead us on the forbidden path of war against humanity. We suffered enough and are still suffering because we forgot the teachings of our great sages and leaders. We forgot that the real war to be fought is not with each other, but against evil thoughts and actions. The real victory is not in infiltrating others’ territories or conquering their region and wealth, but overcoming the negativities of ego, lust and anger within oneself. We need to remember that the paths of various sects may differ, but they all lead to a common destination; the real essence of every religion is the same, i.e. to follow the path of Dharma (righteousness). Like us, others too have the right to choose their desired path, so respect and accept their choices. To prove your right, you need not declare others’ wrong. Be proud of your origin, ethnicity, religion and culture, but make sure, in doing so, you are not hurting or disrespecting the sentiments of others. Don’t let some evil and corrupt minds sow the seeds of discord amongst you all; don’t let yourself become the medium for fulfilling their selfish motives.

Some battles are inevitable. Before taking part, question yourself whether the battle is worth fighting; are you really fighting for the noble cause or just because someone provoked you? Have a soulful talk with yourself in silence, away from the outer chaos, and trust me, you will get answers. Our soul knows what we truly desire for inner peace; all we need is a connection with our inner self.

You must be wondering how conveniently I said befriend your soul as if it’s someone with bones and flesh. It might not be a visible entity, like others; you have to spend time with yourself, away from the uproar and chaos of society, and trust me, you feel the bond between yourself and your soul. This lack of connection with self is the major cause of depression, low self-esteem, loneliness and suicidal tendencies, especially in the young generation. They remain so engrossed in the illusory world of social media that they lose trust in themselves, they rely too much on validations from others, for a few likes, they are ready to give up their individuality and ethics, and always trying to mould themselves into a constantly changing vision of others. I am not against social media; it has helped us a lot in making our voices reach the masses and connect with like-minded people across the world; what bothers me is overdependence on it. You people need to understand that to develop real emotions of trust, empathy, confidence and mental strength, to be strong enough to face the hardships of life with dignity, you need real connections, not virtual ones. Even science has proved that no matter how much a virtual image appears real, it is but an illusion; nothing virtual can compete with real, be it an image or a human bond.

We have become so addicted to this virtual world that our minds need constant stimulation, we are constantly scrolling and refreshing our gadgets for new feeds, we have forgotten to spend real time with our family and friends, even with ourselves. You might think that with the advancement of technologies, you no longer need people to guide or solve your problems, but in reality, you are losing touch with the pillars of life, i.e. human relations. The bond which your parents shared with their grandparents and mentors, the wisdom, love, and care they received from them, was priceless. Even the wealth of the whole world can’t buy the warmth of those pure and selfless bonds. Don’t let yourself be misguided by the conception that money can buy everything, even respect. Though it’s not completely your fault; our society, represented by a few opportunistic and materialistic minds, made us believe since childhood that one’s worth is judged by his/her grades or by monetary wealth and status. We again became victims of others' mindset and, in this never-ending rat-race of power, money and fame, we are losing the priceless gems life gave us. I am not saying accumulate wealth and material comforts, but also invest your time in earning faithful relations; not money, but those real emotional bonds will serve as your anchor amidst storms of life.

Though we are strangers yet, while communicating via this letter, I felt an unspoken bond with you all; I hope, while reading, you too have somewhere felt the same. With this positive note, I end this letter. Though there is still so much to share, for now I should give rest to my thoughts and fingers.

Waiting to have another heartfelt communication soon.

Wishing you a prosperous future ahead.

From,

Your friend and well-wisher.
